Wausau Mayor Jim Tipple says 10 city employees are going to be laid off indefinitely. The mayor says he cannot estimate how long the employees would be laid off.
The mayor says all of the laid off employees work for the Department of Public Works, Local 1287.
When asked if employees from other departments would be laid off, the mayor responded that the city is working on that.
The Mayor says if employees gave up raises that would have saved the City of Wausau $365,000.
These layoffs do, however, affect snow plow drivers.
The Mayor says they do have back-up plans to ensure snow removal is quick and safe.
In addition, the city is implementing non-voluntary furlough days for all full and part time employees. Two furlough days will be held in 2009, one on November 25 and one on December 23. This will affect hundreds of employees.
Mayor Tipple says these measures are a starting point for fixing the city's budget deficit. He would not say whether more layoffs would take place in 2010.
A firefighter at the press conference at city hall asked the mayor if any firefighters were going to be laid off. The mayor said that was not what he said, but for the time being, no firefighters are being laid off.
Mayor Tipple says they are also looking at delaying development projects to save money.
They also plan on delaying the replacement of the City's police car fleet, running them a year longer than originally planned.
The vote on the budget will take place Tuesday at 7p.m.
The absolute latest the budget could be passed is December 10th.
Now, because no meetings are scheduled between the city and the union, these layoffs will not be reversed.
Latest Comments
It is about time Mayor and the council stop putting the burden onthe taxpayer and take action to control city government and spending. The first project that should be delayed is the 400 block. No city money should be spent on this unneeded project.
Instead of bashing the mayor, of a city you don't even live in, why not give this a chance? There are so many people out there that are unemployed already, this kind of negative attitude is exactly what makes things better!! Get a life!!
Did anybody ask Mr. Tipple what amount of His wages, assistants, secretarial duties, ect. that he is giving up? I thought not. If he cares so much for his community, than he must be giving things up in order to save some jobs right? right. He isn't giving anything up, is he?
