The opening weekend of the second summer deer hunt turned up some sick deer in southwestern Wisconsin.
But, state wildlife supervisor Tom Howard says it'll take several weeks to determine whether the deer were infected with chronic wasting disease or something else.
Howard says the hunt was rather slow. The Department of Natural Resources organized the summer hunts to try to eradicate the disease from the herd.
Howard says between 100 and 150 deer were killed. He says perhaps 40 percent of them were taken by government sharpshooters hunting at night.
The DNR wants an estimated 25,000 deer killed in a 361-square-mile area of Dane, Iowa and Sauk counties. That's where 18 deer with chronic wasting disease were found.
Hunting continues until Friday night. Special summer hunts are also planned in August and September.
In June, hunters and government sharpshooters got 262 deer in the so-called eradication hunt.
