School counselors from across the state are learning how to keep kids on the right path at the Wisconsin School Counselor Association Conference in Stevens Point.

As a part of the conference, counselors get to hear from keynote speakers like Dr. Adolph Brown III, who works with high-risk children.

Brown was also considered a high-risk child, because he grew up in a single parent home in the projects.

Now, he's using his experiences to show kids that anything is possible.

"Regardless of who you are, where you're from or how much money you have, success is out there for everyone," Brown says.

Counselors like Rob Ocker say it's also important to remind kids that they have somewhere to turn if they need help.

"We're the merchants of hope, " Ocker says. "We are the agents of change. The counselor plays that role where kids can go to."

More than 1,000 school counselors are attending this year's conference.
