The eagles are rejoining a population that experts say is healthy, thanks in part to warmer temperatures keeping the ice open on the Wisconsin River.

"If you're looking for bald eagles," said Nick Derene, Raptor Education Group Inc., "the best times to find them, is along open water, along the Wisconsin River is a great place, Stevens Point during migration times in the fall and spring."

Biologists studying the birds of prey counted 614 eagles along a 180-mile corridor of the Wisconsin River. That compares with 242 counted last year.
