Soldiers in Iraq Getting Holiday Greetings From an Unlikely Place

After getting the names and addresses of the soldiers from our Holiday Mail Call, some of the female prisoners have been busy making and signing cards. Peggy Verick, who's serving time for theft, says it feels good to do something thoughtful for others this season.

"There are not many people we can serve being where we are, and it's a really opportune time to express to them our gratitude and thanks, and wish them the best."

The women were inspired by a book they've been reading in their weekly bible study called, "The Purpose Driven Life."

Peggy says it's helping her feel stronger and better about life every day.

"The gals came up with the idea and I said, 'All right, let's roll,'" says Joni Juergens of the Greater Wausau Christian Services. "Got cards, gotta get stamps, we'll get them sent out."

Juergens also says that, "instead of just feeling bad they're away from their families, they're reaching out to those away from their families as well."

All the supplies and cards have been donated. You can find a complete Holiday Mail Call list on WSAW's website, or look for it in the Wausau Daily Herald, our newspaper partner.
