The President of the American College of Emergency Physicians says more home owners are choosing to do their own repairs... and as a result are ending up in the emergency room.

Stefanie Carter, the Director of Trauma at Aspirus Wausau Hospital says Emergency Room visits go up in spring and summer time.

Cash strapped home owners are cutting corners on home repairs and remodeling by doing it themselves. Carter says those savings are being spent on trips to the emergency room. She says no matter how you fall you still could end up with fractures.

"Some people can land on both feet, and will have leg and spine fractures, those that land on their wrists can have fractures there an in their forearms and shoulders."

"We are very concerned about people climbing ladders to do their own roofing work. We recommend they be careful and be capable of doing the job," says Ron Omernick of the Wausau Fire Department.

Inspector Omernick recommends having someone hold the ladder for you if you are working on your roof and gutters. If you do fall, call 9-1-1.

He says it's best that you don't move until the paramedics get there.

"The reason we say that is if they fell off a ladder and do have a neck injury we don't want to move them because they could suffer possible nerve damage."

Carter says if you have any discomfort after an injury and it doesn't seem to be getting better, it may be time to seek treatment from a doctor.
