It's described as a time for many Native Americans that has not been fully captured in our history books when thousands of Native American families were torn from their children to be assimilated into the American culture.
Many boarding schools were built across the country. Including dozens in Lac Du Flambeau.
Only one stands today, and Tribal Historic Preservation Officer Kelly Jackson is hoping to fully restore it. She says the boarding schools were built on this land and used from 1896 to 1932. In the buildings, children were forced to become all things American.
"It was home to children in the tribal Midwest region and it wasn't until stories were told by elders that I had never heard and many of our communities had never heard that it became a reality," said Kelly Jackson, Historic Preservation Officer.
From that point on, Kelly decided she should do something to tell the story that had been slowly slipping away. Kelly hopes once this boarding school's restored, it would be used to interpret the boarding school era and it's impact on tribal communities.
The exhibit would hold educational classrooms, language programs and even an archival center. The director says she's hoping to raise $400,000 to fully restore the building so no one will ever forget.
