While most retailers continue watching their sales figures plunge, there is one section of retailing that remains red hot for its ability to generate lots of green.
Second hand and thrift stores, like St. Matthias in Minocqua, say even though the number of resale shops continues to climb, sales remain steady because shoppers continue looking for the best bargain.
"We haven’t seen a decline,” said Ruth Wagner, who works at St. Matthias Thrift Shop. “We’ve actually seen an upswing and with the tourist season coming right now it’s definitely going to increase."
Workers at the store say although they see a spike in summer sales, there continues to be a steady stream of shoppers who come in weekly and even daily in their search for the perfect find.
St. Matthias says each quarter a handful of charities benefit from the store’s sales.
