The Wausau man known as 'Rambo' is once again on the loose.

Steven K. Johnson, 57, spent 16 years in prison for shooting a Weston man and barely missing Marathon County Sheriff's Deputy Andrew Kleppe more than two decades ago.

According to the Dept. of Corrections, Johnson has not checked in with his parole agent this week, and they believe he's on the run.

Thompson does have a sister in Alaska, and he was able to go there in late 2006, but he broke his parole and was sent back to a Wisconsin prison.

In November of 2008, Johnson was again paroled into the City of Wausau where he's worked and lived ever since.

But authorities believe he took off late this weekend, since he failed to check in with his parole officer Monday, when a warrant was made for his arrest.

"He was reporting in to us once a week, we were getting to his place regularly so he was where he was supposed to be at least up until this weekend," said Mike Williams, corrections field supervisor for the Dept. of Corrections.

Because of Thompson's violent criminal history, he is considered dangerous.

"It isn't like Mr. Thompson has targeted anybody specifically in the public or anything like that. I really don't know what he's thinking. I just want him back in custody so I can find out at this point," said Williams.

Police believe he may be carrying a handgun, and he's known to be very resourceful.

He's proven to be someone who can live off the land after he hid out in the woods for weeks after the 1987 shooting.

Thompson was also a suspect in 40 cabin and home burglaries throughout the northwoods.

If you see him, call 911 immediately.

Local police have contacted neighboring agencies and are using a S.W.A.T. team to search locations where he's been known to be.
