While many families are trying to find every way to stretch their dollars these days, Newschannel 7 is bringing you a week long series of Super Savers reports on how to save anyway you can.
Today Julia Fello shows us the latest Energy Star rated appliances you can use in your home that could save your family hundreds of dollars each year.
"A lot of people don't realize about that type of energy savings at all. A lot of people are still surprised," said Bruce Kartman, Salesman at Furniture and Appliance Mart in Plover.
They say the most important label to look for when shopping for an appliance is the Energy Star efficient rating. This was created by the Environmental Protection Agency which promotes energy efficient consumer products.
"You can get Energy Star appliances across all categories, so I mean you can get Energy Star laundry, you can get Energy Star dishwasher you can get Energy Star refrigeration," said Jon Gadbois, Director of Advertising at Furniture and Appliance Mart.
The first place you should look at in your home is in the laundry room. Experts say that's where you waste the most energy. They showed us front load washing machines that use about 25% percent less water than its predecessors.
"A machine that's going to average about 15 and a half gallons of water per load which saves you an average of 35 to 40 gallons of water every time you do laundry. So a machine like this we can save upwards of $200 a year," said Jon Gadbois who was showing us the most affordable washers at his store.
Dryers are probably the least energy efficient appliances in your home. But new Energy Star front load dryers can reduce drying time by more than 30%.
"With this machine it takes 18 minutes to dry on it's quickest cycle as compared to about 40 to 45 minutes if your using a typical top load washer machine," said Jon Gadbois.
While it may not come as a surprise, the least energy efficient appliance in your kitchen is the refrigerator.
"You take for example a refrigerator that was sold 15 years ago, a side by side costs you $125 to $135 a year. Now they're down in the $50 to $60 range, so yeah it's a huge difference with the amount of energy they use," said Bruce Kartman.
Energy Star dishwashers can save you hundreds of gallons of water each year.
And finally - to the living room. If you feel like you're splurging to buy a flat screen T.V. it might not be a bad investment after all.
"Depending on the size of the LCD T.V. they can use as little electricity as a 60 watt light bulb uses. An LCD T.V. this size is going to use approximately the same as your regular computer at home does," said Jon Gadbois.
The best advice through these tough times, is to make sure the appliances are on your side when it comes to saving money and energy.
"Get as informed as you can, I mean try and find out as much as you can about what models are out there that can save you a lot of money," said Bruce Kartman.
This Saturday on Newschannel 7 weekend Julia Fello talks to experts on what not to cut back on during this recession.
