There are more than one million vehicle accidents involving deer across the country. In Wisconsin, the number exceeds 90,000. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that there are over one billion dollars in damages relating to deer vehicle collisions in the U.S.
Rosemurgy Motors Inc. in Wausau says they're seeing a lot of repairs relating to deer accidents. Costs for those repairs are averaging around 15 hundred dollars.
"The deer herd right now is pretty high we see a little more than normal but every fall it's typical to get this type of repair," says Jerry Cherek, body shop manager.
State troopers say there are some tips to avoid a wreck with a deer. Don't swerve and slow down if you spot a deer on the side of the road. They say fewer people are injured from actually hitting the deer than losing control and swerving.
