Gov. Jim Doyle signed legislation making the possession of methamphetamine a felony.

Previously first-time possession of methamphetamine was a misdemeanor.

The maximum penalty now will be three-and-a-half years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Doyle plans a ceremonial signing of the bill next month in Hudson.
