After being grounded for two days after that deadly crash, the DNR's ten planes and pilots are back in the air helping fight wildfires. Grass fires are quite common this time of year and have been popping up across Northcentral Wisconsin today.
So far this year, there have been nearly 300 wildfires state-wide.
This one erupted in Mosinee, where a DNR Forest Ranger says about 3/4 of an acre burned behind several houses.
The ranger tells us while the cause of the fire is under investigation, it was caused by a local resident.
"Most fires in Wisconsin are caused by people burning debris and burning rubbish when they shouldn't and where they shouldn't, just carelessness," said Matt Slater DNR Forest Ranger.
He says the current fire danger in Marathon County is very high.
"This is normal this time of year. The vegetation hasn't greened up yet, it's still dry from this past winter, but the snow is gone and there's really no moisture in the vegetation," said Slater.
He says the danger in our area should go down in about two weeks, when moisture starts coming back.
But until then everyone should take the necessary precautions before burning anything including checking DNR's website to see if there are any burning bans or restrictions in place.
