Police Chief David Spenner says the layoffs may be necessary because the department has to cut $1.7 million from its budget.

Alderman David Maack says it's too early in the budget process for the layoffs to be a done deal.

The city council plans to vote on the budget around early November. If necessary, the layoffs would take effect January first.

The officers who received notices have been on the force two years or less.

Faced with the possibility of losing their jobs, Spencer says the officers could find new jobs with other agencies.
