Additional samples of lake water were taken after the bacteria was found near the beach. E-coli was found in samples taken near Wingra Park and the University of Wisconsin Arboretum.

Public health technician Kirsti Sorsa says the bacteria seems to be more widespread around the lake.

Vilas Beach has been closed since July 25 because of the contamination. The e-coli found there is the same form that caused food-related illnesses and deaths during the 1990s.
