Riding into the Realm of Rodeos
It’s a dangerous sport, and yet bull riding still thrives. But why? A bull rider from Manawa, a.k.a. Rodeo City, explains why he loves the sport. Posted: 5:50 PM Mar 26, 2009Reporter: Jonalee Merkel Email Address: jmerkel@wsaw.com |

It’s been called the “most dangerous eight seconds in sports,” and when you see people participating in it, you may ask yourself, what are they thinking?!
But living in Rodeo City, Wisconsin, it’s almost impossible for a little bit of the wild west not to rub off on you.
Just ask Jeremiah Dallman, who lives in Manawa.
He has the cowboy boots, the big belt buckle and some flashy fringed chaps, but don’t be mistaken. He’s a bull rider, not a cowboy, and he has been since he was 10.
“I didn’t start our real good though,” Dallman said.
But it also didn’t stop him from riding, or from rounding up a few wins.
"My highlight was the Great Lakes Circuit finals,” he said. “It has always been one of my goals to make it to Louisville and I finally was able to accomplish that goal."
He accomplished that goal back in 2007 after becoming one of the top 12 riders from 9 states in the Great Lakes Circuit.
It was one of many successes he had had during his rodeo rides, although success did not come without any pain.
After all, bull riding isn’t the safest sport around.
"You get hurt every now and then but that's part of it,” Dallman said. "I had a bull swing me down and hit me in the face and ended up breaking a socket off my jaw and when they asked me where I was I told them I was in Buffalo, MN and I was in Edgewood, Iowa."
So why take the risk and ride an animal that bucks and spins just to get you off his back?
Dallman says the sport really isn’t any more dangerous than sports like snowboarding, motorcross or skydiving, but it is just as exhilarating.
"It's addicting, I guess,” he said. “It's like anything else. It's such a rush - there's nothing like it."
