A Wisconsin politician is speaking out against a pay raise the U.S. Senate has voted to give itself.

Sen. Russ Feingold's effort to stop a $3,400 per senator pay raise was shot down this week by a 60 to 34 vote.

Feingold says, with the economic problems the nation is having, now is not the time for the Senate to give itself a raise.

"I don't think we really should be taking a pay raise in so much difficulty," said Sen. Russ Feingold, (D) Wisconsin, "Internationally, we have the largest deficit in the country's history, there are nine million Americans unemployed."

Some senators have defended the pay raise, saying it's a cost of living adjustment.

Feingold says he'll take the pay increase and donate it to the U.S. Treasury, the same thing he's done with his last five pay raises.
