Behind the Mic: 95.5's Dave Kallaway and Stacy Cole

Members of our NewsChannel 7 Daybreak Team aren't the only broadcasters who start each day long before most of our viewers are awake... chances are your favorite morning radio hosts are also getting ready for their day while you're still in bed.

This week we're bringing you a special series of reports called "behind the mic" to let you "see" what happens on the radio.

The banter and laughter flows easily between dave kallaway and stacy cole - hosts of wifc-fm's morning show, kallaway on the rise.
Its probably no wonder - given they've been a team since 2000. It all started when dave was searching for a new co-host. "Stace put flowers in my garage" Dave recalls, "She said 'I want the gig' - and she got the gig!" Stacy adds, "Don't forget about the balloons!"
She says she knew she had to get his attention. "They were going to be interviewing tons of people and I was filling in because the other host had moved on - and I gotta get his attention. I want the job."

That was almost a decade ago. Today their relationship has grown from just co-workers - to trusted friends. Stacy says, "It's a lot like a marriage. You have to cultivate it and work on it and I think we have enough respect for each other to know this works on air - and we have to make the friendship work as well."

Dave adds, "Her birthday is the same as my wife's birthday - so both Saggitarius - and they have a lot of parallels. So if Stace has a headache, I know chances are I'm going home to a headache. My wife says, 'I got a headache', I know you have a headache cause she's got a headache!"

After sharing the airwaves together each morning... Dave and Stacy spend countless hours teaming up at community events and sending each other ideas for the next morning's show.

"We're constantly im-ing, twittering each other, face-booking each other so all the different ways you can communicate, that's the way we talk from 10am on." Dave says.

They are constantly gathering material for their show. That means staying involved in the community and constantly looking for interesting things to get their listeners involved in. Dave says, "Things like the Polar Plunge or Disco Cures Cancer or you're doing stuff over the summer months - the next day you're going to hear about it. If you didn't go - you're going to hear about it."

Its clear the "Kallaway on the Rise" team has a lot of fun together - but make no mistake - the days are long and they start early - well before the sun rises. But both agree - its worth it.

Stacy says, "We actually make an impact and that's importan to getting up , working crazy hours and weekends - strange hours - and we do make a sacrifice. But we love it.."

Dave agrees, "It just takes a little feedback to keep you going. We get feedback at things like Disco Cures Cancer where somebody comes up and says 'what you're doing affects my life', or "I've recieved money from your foundation'. One person does that, you know you gotta keep doing it."

You can hear "kallway on the rise" each weekday morning on 95-FIVE, WIFC.
