If you're a country music fan, or just like waking up to some fun, you've no doubt turned your radio dial to 101.9 WDEZ from 5 until 10 weekday mornings.

NewsChannel 7 went “Behind the Mic” with Lee Peek and Nikki Montgomery to get a closer look at the country duo you’ve come to know and love every “great country morning.”

Their voices have become a staple of Northcentral Wisconsin, and after more than 4 years of hearing their voices together, it's hard to imagine anything different.

Lee says, “We've been doing this so long it's hard not to develop a relationship. You’ve got a lot of give, a lot of take, a lot of communication to pull it all off."

And it takes a lot of hard work for Lee and Nikki to get their “Great Country Mornings” show on the air.

“We start prepping the day before for the next show,” Lee says, “Then get together in the studio and iron everything out."

For Lee, the morning begins at 4. Nikki joins him at about 5. But they both say it becomes routine, and the hardest part is trying to have a normal schedule on the weekends. They do admit, though, they have the tendency to rely on the dependable pick-me-up.. coffee.

Nikki says, “I've put a limit on my coffee intake. I try to have my last cup by 8 AM, and keep it to 2 to 3 cups a day.”

Lee jokes, “I was actually just sitting here wanting another cup myself, and that would have been my 12th.. maybe.”

They need the energy, though, to come up with interesting and sometimes crazy topics that both they and their listeners will want to talk about. It's those entertaining topics, combined with your morning news and weather forecast, and a lot of country music that Lee and Nikki say is their recipe for success. They both agree that success wouldn't be possible if it wasn't for you, their listeners.

Lee says, “Thanks for letting us keep doing this.”

Nikki adds, “Absolutely, thanks for tuning in, chiming in, emailing, calling.”

“I don’t think you can say thanks enough,” Lee says. “Really, if it’s not for them, we’re not here.”
