With the holidays quickly approaching, many of us are looking for ways to reach out and lend a helping hand in our community. But you probably never thought to reach out in a turkey costume.
Hundreds of participants, clad in turkey attire, took to the streets of Wausau Saturday for the 3rd annual Amazing Turkey Trot. Hosted by Chatterbox Charities, the trot is a 6 mile race scavenger hunt hybrid.
"We give you a list of clues. It's kind of like 'The Amazing Race.' You get the list right at the same time as all the other participants. Once you have the list you try to figure out where you have to go and what you have to do when you get there," Turkey Trot Committee member Mary Ninnemann explained.
Participants had 4 hours to complete a variety of different challenges across the City, including bowling, making hotel beds and pumping gas for strangers.
The teams of two also picked up a third team member at one of their stops.
"We have frozen turkey's that they have to take with them on the race. So they actually have to carry a frozen turkey. Then, when they get back, if they donate the turkey, per pound, they get deductions on their time," Ninnemann said.
The turkeys weren't the only things being donated. All proceeds from the event go to a number of different community charities including The Neighbors Place and The Women's Community. Teams also donated a lot more than just the $50 registration fee.
"Along the race we have mandatory donation spots," Ninnemann told NewsChannel 7.
Chatterbox Charities was hoping to raise $20,000 this year. That's $5,000 more than they raised last year.
