One day after a Richland County man is found guilty for a violent standoff at his home last April, authorities are releasing dramatic video of what happened that day.
A jury found 61-year-old Robert Bayliss of Viola guilty of 13 charges this week, including four counts of attempted first-degree intentional homicide.
It all stems from a standoff last year that authorities say could have clearly turned out to be much worse, and they have the video to prove it.
When officers were called to Robert Bayliss's Viola home last April, they had no idea what they would find or that it would get to this level.
"We know we're going to encounter violent dangerous persons and we want to keep law enforcement officers safe," says La Crosse County Sheriff Steve Helgeson. "It worked as it was supposed to, it saved lives that day, it saved lives of the officers that were there and we're happy to have it."
Happy to have a protective vehicle, a bearcat that during the standoff sustained some serious damage from all the gunfire.
"The vehicle was repaired, there was some damage that will remain."
After several hours... and help from several law enforcement agencies. Bayliss surrendered after a fire broke out in his home and he was taken into custody.
A situation that he says was saved by secure equipment and well trained officers.
"I believe as do the officers that were there that day that without the vehicle and we had one from Eau Claire there also, that law enforcement would have very likely lost lives."
A report is being put together to help the judge determine an appropriate sentence for Bayliss. After that's done, the judge will make his ruling.
Authorities say Bayliss is known to have strong anti-government attitudes. Bayliss says he thought police were trespassing on his property.
