The 56-year-old Schneider has served as the chief clerk of the state Senate for 26-and-a-half years. His retirement takes effect at the end of this week.

Schneider was first elected Senate chief clerk in 1977 and was re-elected by each Legislature since then.

Senate Majority Leader Mary Panzer says Schneider was a driving force behind the modernization and automation of the state Legislature.

The chief clerk serves as the clerk of the Senate when it is in session and supervises the preparation of legislative records. The clerk also supervises personnel and administrative functions within the Senate.
