The enormous size and number of aircraft flying in to Oshkosh forces a lot of pilots to look for other airports to call home during the event.

But many of them aren't complaining, thanks to the accommodations by smaller host airfields.

More than 10,000 aircraft are already making their way to Oshkosh for next week’s EAA show, but not everyone is taking a direct route. More and more pilots are parking at small airfields like the Stevens Point Municipal Airport, and finding another way to get to the show.

Stevens Point Airport will jump to five times its normal size when 100 planes land there by the end of the weekend. Most of the traffic will come in the form of Piper and Cessna planes who are meeting in Stevens Point.

David Kowalski, Piper and Cessna Magazine editor, says, "The prospect of flying into that major airport at the busiest time of the year; not everyone is comfortable with that, so to be able to fly into a great airport like Stevens Point Municipal Airport really makes it a manageable event."

With so many planes coming into Oshkosh for EAA, many of the pilots have started looking towards smaller airports like the one in Stevens Point to not only find room, but save a little money on gas.

"We tend to have lower fuel prices. We don't tend to raise. I haven't raised my car rental prices. I haven't raised my fuel prices to take advantage of EAA," says Pinney.

And still, others like Mike Jones, who are racing in two major air races before heading to EAA, just appreciate being able to reconnect.

"It’s kind of a chance to come back and this time instead of tending to the airplane during the entire event, just be able to walk around and visit the exhibits and planes, and pilots, I've come to know as a result of the experience."

With the extra pilots and spectators coming into the area many of the local hotels in Steven's Point are already saying they have no vacancies left.
