BAYFIELD, Wis. (AP) -- A federally protected island off the northern tip of Wisconsin has been closed indefinitely because of a 200-pound black bear that's becoming increasingly bold.

The bear is on Manitou Island in Lake Superior, an island controlled by Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.

Lakeshore spokeswoman Myra Foster said Thursday the bear is fearless and doesn't respond to their efforts to chase it away.

Park staff think it's the same bear that caused the island to close in August. During that incident the bear devoured campers' supplies of Spam, and later chased a park employee into an outhouse.

Wildlife experts say most bears are shy and tend to flee from humans, but can become aggressive if they lose their natural fear of people.
