MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- People will get a chance this week to sound off about Alliant Energy's plans for a new coal-fired power plant in Cassville.

State regulators will hold a public hearing in Cassville late Monday afternoon. They also plan to hold a public hearing in Portage, an alternative plant site, late Tuesday afternoon.

The utility estimates the plant could cost as much as $1.3 billion.

The power company says it plans to offset carbon dioxide emissions from the plant by using renewable fuel for 20 percent of its output and shutting down an aging coal-fired boiler in Sheboygan.

Regulators have until mid-December to rule on the project.
