WAUSAU, Wis. (AP) -- A state appeals court has upheld a northern Wisconsin woman's life prison sentence for fatally stabbing a man during a 2004 party at his home.
Fifty-nine-year-old Susan Wakeman of Wabeno contended a Forest County jury erred in ruling she knew right from wrong when she killed Louis Shepard, whom she was romantically involved with during her teens.
The 3rd District Court of Appeals said Tuesday the jury properly rejected some expert medical testimony and accepted Wakeman's explanation for her behavior -- she was angry and drunk.
The jury found she had a mental disease or defect but could conform her behavior to the law.
Court records say Wakeman called 911 to report Shepard had been brutally beaten, ran to her nearby home, got two knives, returned to Shepard's home and stabbed him twice.
