Infections and other complications from body piercings are on the rise.

A doctor from Aspirus Weston Clinic gives us some tips to help you steer clear of infections, before hopping on the piercing trend.

"The skin is our primary barrier to infection once you pierce that you lose that" Says Dr. Larry Gordon.

Dr. Gordon says any piercings can become infected and he's seen the most complications with navel piercings.

He says typical problems include swelling, infections at the piercing site and allergic reactions to the metal in the jewelry.

"The next most problem is an allergic reaction to the metal in the jewelry and it's usually nickel."

Dr. Gordon says more serious complications include contracting Hepatitis B or C, and even HIV.

Brandon "Inky" Ingram, a licensed body piercing artist with nine years of experience says a quality facility will sterilize their equipment and give you detailed aftercare instructions.

"Absolutely no alcohol, or peroxide on them what so ever wash it twice a day with anti bacterial soap. Dial will work."

Both agree if you do decide to get a piercing, the best defense against infection is washing your hands before touching your piercing and keeping it clean.

Ingram says if you are having discomfort you should return to the place where you had your piercing done... but Dr. Gordon suggests talking to your doctor to check for infection.
