The play, "The Laramie Project" tells the story of a young man named Matthew Shepard who was beaten to death because he was gay. But as the cast members rehearse for opening night, the same kind of hate they are portraying on stage is coming to life off stage.
Kansas pastor, Fred Phelps protested against Shepard's homosexuality at his funeral and now plans to protest the play about him here in Wausau.
But a group of area citizens say they want to promote their message of tolerance through a celebration away from anti-gay protesters.
The group is holding their celebration on March 16 at 3p.m. at the United Methodist Church.
