An apartment in Eagle River is badly damaged Thursday following a fire above the Vilas Theatre, 216 East Wall Street. Smoke and water damage is also reported to the business itself.

According to WRJO-AM in Eagle River, the Vilas County Sheriff's Department received a 911 call at approximately 6:40 a.m. of smoke coming from the roof of the building. Cinema manager Chad Conway, who lives in the apartment, was awakened by a smoke detector. Attempts to put out the flames with a fire extinguisher were unsuccessful.

Eagle River firefighters quickly controlled and extinguished the fire, containing any significant damage to the apartment.

Conway, who was alone at the time, escaped unharmed, but some pets were unaccounted for.

Mutual aid was provided by the Conover, Three Lakes and St. Germain fire departments.
