The Wood County sheriff's department says Kuhn's Den a bar in a building that's stood in the town of Sigel for 40 years has been gutted. Firefighters were able to get to it before the fire that destroyed it got out of control.

"One of the Vesper firefighters happened by here and saw smoke coming out of the building," Rudolph Fire Chief Tony Konkol said. "He drove around back and saw it was on fire."

They couldn't save the tavern, but quick thinking from the firefighter who was just driving by kept the situation from getting worse.

"Knocked on the door, got the two people that were in the building up and out," said Konkol.

About 100 people from five area departments battled the blaze.

"It was fully involved when we got here," Konkol said. "It took us an hour to knock it down."

Firefighters say even more challenging than fighting the fire, was doing it in such bitter weather.

"The cold. It hurts you every time you try to fight. Everything freezes up," Konkol said.

Interestingly enough, however, the chief says it was the wind that made things easier for them.

"It was kind of in our favor, because the smoke was blowing away from us," said Konkol.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but the chief says he believes it started in the bar area.
