Four hundred students at D.C. Everest Junior High got to make history this year. In fact, they do it every year.
Students research an aspect of history for four months, and then do a project on it. Many of them make exhibits to illustrate what they've learned. Teachers say this is a way of learning history has kids doing more than just reading about it.
"We've been having the kids look for resources in our library, as well as searching for resources throughout the state," said Dawn Bohm, English teacher.
Teachers say the skills students are learning to make their projects are ones they can use in the future.
"History for most people is something they get straight out of a textbook," said Social Studies teacher Mark Bohlman. "For this project kids are going out and becoming their own historians."
"Throughout their lives, it's important for them to know if they have questions they need answers to, that they know where to go to find those answers," Bohm said.
Top projects are later picked to compete against projects from other schools.
