Hundreds of Dogs Race Through Merrill Countryside
It may look like the dogs are doing all the work, but it takes a lot of stamina to be a musher.
"Today we started at 20 below." Ron Behm, chair of the races that started and finished at Merrill's Pine River Elementary Sunday said. "Some days we have a foot of snow to contend with."
"It helps to stay in shape," said Jennifer Kress, a 10-year-veteran of the sport. "I rollerblade, personally. There's a lot of people that do that kind of stuff around here too."
More than 50 racers registered for the event. Many say athletes also have to have a desire to get the adrenaline pumping, because racing sleds move at an about 18 to 22 miles an hour.
The racers competed for cash prizes, the largest being $500 for the winner of the 10-dog sled race.
