MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Thunderstorms streamed across water-logged southern Wisconsin Thursday afternoon, spawning at least one tornado and dumping heavy rain that promises to worsen the state's widespread flooding problems.
A tornado briefly touched down in Markesan in Green Lake County about 4:40 p.m. but no injuries were reported.
National Weather Service meteorologist Rusty Kapela says it appeared to be a weak tornado that touched down and took down some trees.
The Poynette area received about 2 1/2 inches of rain within two hours and adjoining areas received one to two inches.
Kapela says that by the time the storms end, people in the southern two-thirds of Wisconsin will have gotten up to three to four inches of rain.
The forecast calls for storms throughout the evening. The weather service issued flash flood watches for the southern part of the state with tornado watches in central and eastern areas.
