MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Concerns about identity theft are changing the way Wisconsin Public Radio conducts its fundraisers.
The nonprofit radio station replaced the volunteers who usually staff its phone banks with a hired call center during its pledge drive this month.
Jennifer Dargan is in charge of on-air fundraising and volunteers. She says WPR was sad to let the volunteers go but didn't want to be responsible if someone stole credit card information from the station's donors.
Dargan says it's unlikely WPR will use volunteers again because it can't get insurance to cover identity theft. The call center has its own insurance.
Dargan says public radio stations in Minnesota and New York also have begun hiring call centers because of worries about identity theft.
