The number of fatal vehicle crashes in Wisconsin is down this year, but law enforcement says that may change with the start of the summer travel season.
Wisconsin State Patrol says there have been 84 fewer fatalities across the state and says there are several reasons for the decline including more efficient EMS response, better vehicle design, and more importantly more people wearing their seat belts.
Captain Jeff Frenette, of Wisconsin State Patrol, says, "You really need to wear your safety belt it does make a difference. People watch Nascar and they're into racing - you wouldn't see one of those drivers get in a vehicle without strapping in."
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says when seat belts are worn properly they reduce the risk of fatal injuries by 45 percent for people in the front seat of cars and 60 percent for people in pick-up trucks, s-u-vs, and mini-vans.
Monday May 19th is the start of the "Click It or Ticket" campaign, which means drivers can be cited if they're pulled over and not wearing their seat belts.
