Opening arguments have begun in the trial of the former Wausau police officer who's accused of trying to kill his wife in Shawano County. Nine women and five men have been picked as jurors.

Prosecutors said Lee tried to kill his wife when he crashed his truck into a bridge in September. They say he was abusive to her throughout their marriage and was on edge because of debt and pending divorce.

The defense says Lee will testify he did not intentionally hurt his wife and that he loves and respects her.

Opening statements in the Chueng Lee case were originally expected to begin Monday with the trial lasting an estimated two weeks.

Lee has pleaded not guilty to first-degree attempted homicide. Court records show the charges have been amended to also include second-degree sexual assault and aggravated battery.

Lee resigned from the Wausau Police Department in November 2007. He served with the force for 15 years prior to his arrest.
