Authorities say there are multiple persons of interest in the death of a Medford woman whose remains were found over the weekend in Sawyer County, according to Taylor County Sheriff Bruce Daniels.

A news conference was held Tuesday morning at the sheriff's department.

The remains were identified as 38-year-old Jean Viken, who had been last seen in Taylor County in late January.

In a news release from the Taylor County Sheriff's Department, analysis also indicates that Viken appears to have died of a gunshot wound. The case is being investigated as a homicide.

However, the Taylor County medical examiner tells WEAU-TV in Eau Claire that Viken had multiple gunshot wounds, including one to the chest.

Daniels also tells WEAU-TV that there are no suspects in custody and that Viken's four children are staying with their father.

The remains were found early Saturday morning by two fishermen, according to Taylor County authorities, who were notified by the Sawyer County Sheriff's Department.

They say clothes found at the scene - approximately 10 miles north and 2.5 miles east of Hawkins in eastern Sawyer County - were consistent with what was last seen worn by Viken upon disappearing January 29.

The remains were taken to University Hospital in Madison for forensic analysis.

Forensic experts are also investigating several other items found at the scene.

Her van was found Feb. 6 in dense woods of the Chequamegon National Forest in Ashland County.

Anyone with information on the case is urged to call the Taylor County Sheriff's Department at (715) 748-2200.
