Tuesday voters in Marshfield will be deciding whether to build a new fire station on the north side of town or remodel the current one.
Late last year the common council voted to build a second station, but a group of residents petitioned to have that decision left up to voters.
"I haven't been shown on anything in black and white that says the city of Marshfield needs a fire station on the north end of town," Paul Waterman said.
"If you take a compass and kind of go around the city, it can all be served from that central fire station within four or five minutes,” said Duke Schueller. “The majority of it I should say."
But the fire department says in order for them to meet the Insurance Service Organization’s requirements, a second station is needed.
"One of the things they're looking for is an engine company has to be within a one and a half miles radius of everybody.,” said the Marshfield Fire Department’s Deputy Chief Robert Haight. “We do not achieve that. We have about 40% of the city that's not covered within that one and a half mile radius."
Haight also says whether voters decide to remodel and expand or build an entirely new fire station, the overall cost will be about $3.1 million, and more personnel will need to be hired.
