The State Revenue Department wants more taxpayers to file online. That's because paper returns cost about a dollar more each than electronic returns to process.

And Revenue Secretary Rick Chandler says the department won't have to hire as many temporary workers to process forms.

Using electronic forms helps the taxpayers, too. They'll get their refunds in about five days after filing online. That's compared to six weeks or more using the traditional method.

Chandler says online filing is becoming more popular. In the 2000 tax year, about one-fourth of state filers used online forms. That increased to about one-third last year.

And for the first time, it's free to file online. Before, you had to file through commercial Web sites, which often cost $10 to $40 to use.
