Before 9/11, John Mattek, Jr. was a college student.
After graduating from Antigo High School, Mattek headed to Stevens Point where he took classes at UWSP, but after 9-11, Mattek decided he wanted to help out, so he joined the Marines and soon he was headed to Iraq.
Last week while he was on patrol in the Al-Anbar province, military officials say Mattek's vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb.
He suffered serious head and facial injuries and was transported to a military hospital in Germany.
Over the weekend he was moved to Maryland. That's where he passed away early Monday morning. His parents tell us they were able to make it to the hospital before he passed away.
There is no word yet on when the funeral services will be held.
