All week long, NewsChannel 7 is getting hunters and their family ready for the gun deer season.

This year, the DNR is asking hunters who shoot an adult deer to donate the head for free CWD testing.

Crews at collection sites will keep the deer head and ask you where it was harvested. This will help the state find out if the disease has spread and where.

"This is going to be a critical year. We need to keep the population in check and we need to get this sample," said Rick Weide, a DNR Wildlife Biologist.

Hunters who want to keep the deer antlers will also have that option.

The deer head is then sent to a processing center where experts will remove a brain stem sample for testing. Results could take three to six months.

For a collection site nearest to you, call your local DNR office or log onto their Web site at www.dnr.state.wi.us.
