Many of them haven't done it since elementary school, but some adults in the area are proving they can still handle the pressure of a spelling bee.
The bee was put on by the Marathon County Literacy Council at Wausau East on Saturday.
Newschannel Seven's Carrie Hutton helped judge the event. Groups of adults from various local businesses and organizations competed for prizes and helped the council raise more than $2,000.
They'll use the money to buy teaching tools and start up a new tutoring program.
"We are trying to get a rural tutoring program started in outlying areas of Marathon County, so that's what some of the proceeds will go toward today," said Corinne Solsrude, executive director of the Marathon County Literary Council.
The council helps needy adults and families learn how to read and run computers, for example. If you would like to volunteer your time to the Literacy Council, call 261-7292.
