APPLETON, Wis. (AP) -- An Appleton man is expected to plead not guilty to charges that he tried to make his girlfriend miscarry twice by slipping her the abortion pill known as RU-486.
Defense lawyer Thomas Zoesch (ZESH) says that's the plea he expects 34-year-old Manishkumar (meh-NEESH-koo-MAHR') Patel (puh-TEL') to make to the charges filed yesterday in Outagamie County Circuit Court. Those charges include attempted first-degree murder of an unborn child, stalking and violating a restraining order.
Authorities say Patel and his girlfriend, 39-year-old physician Darshana (DAR'-shu-nuh) Patel, have a 3-year-old child together, although Patel is married to someone else. Patel is a common last name for those from India.
The girlfriend became pregnant two more times but miscarried in December and September.
According to the criminal complaint, she became suspicious shortly before the second miscarriage, and when he bought her a smoothie she noticed powder on the rim, took the drink back to her office and had a sample analyzed. When it tested positive for the drug, she told authorities.
