WAUSAU, Wis. (AP) -- The Wausau public schools are looking at a policy on the performance of religious music after parents rebelled last year over moves to limit it.

Daily Herald Media reports that elementary education director Nell Anderson is creating a committee to address the issue as the school board moves toward creating an official policy regarding performances of religious songs in schools.

The district currently relies on an administrative rule to "seek balance, respect and sensitivity toward all cultures and beliefs."
Anderson says that rule is vague.

Religious music became an issue after district leaders attempted to limit performances of sacred songs by the Wausau West High School Master Singers, a choral group known for its holiday performances.

An investigation into the Wausau School District's music programs is now complete, but we're not going to see it right away.

A press release from School Board President Michelle Schaefer says the independent report completed by Ruder Ware has been given to the school board to review.

It goes on say the board must follow procedures of Wisconsin public records law before it can be made public.

That gives school district employees who may be named in the report the opportunity to fight the release.

If no one decides to fight, it will be made public.

The school district's attorney suggested limiting or eliminating religious music from all school concerts.

When that word got out in October, It started a firestorm of controversy.
