MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Gov. Scott Walker and Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett are scheduled to be the headliners at a national school-choice event in Milwaukee.
The event Wednesday morning is part of National School Choice Week. It's organized by advocates who favor giving parents more options to choose which schools their children attend.
School choice includes voucher programs, in which the government helps pay for tuition at private schools, including religious schools. Walker supports vouchers and has pledged to expand the program, but he hasn't said exactly what he will propose.
Barrett has said he opposes expanding the state's voucher program because doing so would hurt property taxpayers. He has said he's willing to consider alternatives as long as they include additional funding for all public schools statewide.
