UW-Madison Enrolling Fewer Wisconsin Students

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The freshman class at the University of Wisconsin-Madison includes the lowest percentage of Wisconsin students in at least a decade.

Admissions data show the class also includes the highest percentage of international students.

A report put together by a university committee and presented this week to the Faculty Senate says the portion of Wisconsin students in the freshman class dropped from 64 percent in 2002 to 56 percent last fall.

The report says Wisconsin now enrolls fewer in-state students than its peer institutions and calls on the university to work harder to attract the state's best high school students.

Provost Paul DeLuca told the Wisconsin State Journal that it could be hard to reverse the trend because fewer students are graduating from Wisconsin high schools.
