Students Strive for Complicated Machines at Rube Goldberg

Posted: Thu 6:28 PM, Feb 07, 2013

Usually science is about making things easier, but Thursday was different. At Antigo High School it was about making things more complicated.

It was the annual Intramural Rube Goldberg Machine Competition. Every year teams are asked to create a machine that can accomplish a simple task in many complicated steps. This year the theme was to nail a hammer in at least 20 steps.

Six teams competed. They each had eight weeks to design the machine.

Teachers say the competition teaches teamwork and creativity.

"We give them a pice of plywood and a few sticks of 2x2's and everything else you see is the student's doing," says science teacher Larry Stookey.

The 1st and 2nd place winners at the competition will advance to the Milwaukee Regional Rube Goldberg Competition at Waukesha County Technical College on March 1st.
