Students at Arbor Vitae - Woodruff School are hoping to raise one million pennies in honor of one of the area's most well known leaders.

The money is being collected to give scholarships to support academic and community based learning in honor of Dr. Kate Newcomb.

Dr. Kate was nicknamed the “angel on snowshoes” as she walked to patients through deep snow and rough weather on snowshoes. Her goal was to build a hospital for the Lakeland area.

Sixty years ago, the first penny parade was started by a geometry class that wanted to see what a million pennies would look like. The class donated the money to Dr. Kate so she could build a hospital.

Sadly, Dr. Kate was only able to enjoy the hospital for one year as she died during surgery.

The school is hoping to collect pennies from all over the country.
