Researchers Hope to Bring Jobs and an Economic Boost by way of a Patent

Posted: Fri 6:36 PM, Jul 20, 2012

A process patented at UW Stevens Point could help bring economic growth and jobs to the state of Wisconsin. Students and professors at the Wisconsin Institute for Sustainable Technology have completed 7 years of work on a new biofuels patent.

They’ve perfected a process that takes biomass and other products from plant material and separates key components. That’s then turned into fuel, carbon fiber, and even rubber for tires. That business can all be kept in the state.

Eric Singsaas, Director of Research for WIST said, “Making value added projects is important rather than exporting money we can increase economic value within the state.”

The researchers work isn’t done though. More engineering is required to take their lab models and make them full scale so they can be used in commercial environments.
