Schools On High Alert Following Shooting
Schools on Alert After Shooting
In response to parent concerns over misunderstanding at Stevens Point Area High School, the district says even though rumors of a shooting are not true, officers will be placed at each school this week.
Monday, authorities said students at SPASH overheard some other kids talk about a shooting at the school on Friday. The police liaison officer did some investigating and determined the kids were actually talking about the shooting last week in Connecticut and not one in Stevens Point on Friday.
Superintendent, Dr. Attila Weninger says in a news release, “The safety of our students is always our number one priority, and we are taking any threats and rumors very seriously.”
Again, the rumor is unsubstantiated, but the district is taking extra precautions to be on the safe side.
In a letter to parents on the district's website, Dr. Weninger says
the Stevens Point Police Department, the Plover Police Department, The County Sherriff’s Department, and the District are working together. To that end, please know the following.
1. There will be a uniformed Plover Policeman in Plover-Whiting and Roosevelt schools for the rest of this week from 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
2. There will be uniformed County Sherriff’s Officer in Kennedy and McDill schools for the rest of this week from 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
3. There will be uniformed Stevens Point Police Officer in Bannach, Jefferson, McKinley, Madison, and Washington schools for the rest of the week from 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
4. At the Junior High Schools, the existing Stevens Point Police Liaison Officers will be on alert and present throughout the building and entrances for the rest of this week.
5. There will be three (3) additional Stevens Point Police Officers on duty at SPASH the rest of this week before, during and after school hours.
6. In addition, each school has taken measures to further increase safety based on their unique building needs and staff.
The district has also increased the number of hall monitors, who have been instructed to watch carefully for any suspicious individuals or behaviors on or around school grounds.
